Required Reading for Primary Grades ( Entering Kindergarten, First, and Second)
Students entering the primary grades are required to read 30 minutes a day with an adult. Please see your next year teacher to obtain a log to document this reading. The Kindergarten and First Grade lists identify age-appropriate books related to themes in the curriculum. The Second Grade reading list is based on perceived student interests. The books listed are suggestions to fulfill the summer reading requirement.

Some of the topics covered in first grade next year will be Nocturnal Animals, Native Americans, Winter Holidays Around the World, Peace, American Presidents, Polar Regions, Weather, Reptiles and Amphibians, Deserts, and Environment and Ecology. Both fiction and non-fiction books related to these themes are highly encouraged to familiarize your child with the topics at hand. The following list consists of suggestions. Please feel free to add your own titles to fulfill the 30 minute daily reading requirement.

Required Summer Reading for Uptown ( entering 3rd-4th grade )
Students entering the third grade this fall are required to read Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary. Students entering the fourth grade are required to read Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater. Students may read by themselves or with adult assistance where appropriate. There is an accompanying assignment that should be completed in addition to the reading. Please see the classroom teacher for details.
In addition to the specific required titles, suggestions of additional readings appear below. Children are encouraged to read all summer to enrich and develop their reading proficiency.
